Mt. Milligan Copper-Gold Mine

Mine construction is now complete, during construction more than 1,000 people were working on the project by the end of summer 2012.

About This Project

The Mt. Milligan Copper-Gold Project, is located 155 km northwest of Prince George, and mid-way between the communities of Fort St. James and Mackenzie in central British Columbia, Canada. The project received an Environmental Assessment (EA) Certificate in March 2009 and a Mines Act Permit from the province of British Columbia in September 2009. Construction is now in its second year and the mine is expected to be operating in the latter part of 2013, with full commercial production scheduled for 2014.

Thompson Creek Metals is holding two open houses to provide information on amendments to its environmental assessment certificate at Mount Milligan. The first, Thompson Creek Metals hopes to build a permanent camp at Mt. Milligan to house its operations team, or a portion of its operations team, and secondly to locate the load-out facility in Mackenzie, BC.

Throughout the duration of construction, the mine will employ over 1,000 people, and approximately another 350 people during its operations. Owner and operator, Thompson Creek Metals Company, intends to fill as many jobs as possible with local candidates and will be providing training programs to help local people gain meaningful employment. The mine will create a variety of jobs with different skills and training. Additional jobs will be required to provide service to the mine. Many of the training courses will be conducted in co-operation with the local campuses of the College of New Caledonia.

The Mount Milligan team includes people based on site, in Fort St. James and Mackenzie, Vancouver, and Denver. In May 2012, the construction crew, including contractors, includes 800+ people. Contractors for the Mt. Milligan project are employed to complete tasks ranging from service and road maintenance, construction, logging and welding, equipment rentals, and security. Major contractors include, but are not limited to, Taba Enterprises, Duz Cho Construction & Logging, Graham Construction, AllNorth, Bam Bam Trucking, Chilko Creek Contracting, Elcon Enterprise Ltd., Mine Monster Welding, Diversified Transportation, and more.

Protecting the environment is a priority for both the local community and the Mount Milligan team. The environmental design of the Mount Milligan Project has benefited from almost 20 years of study. An experienced planning team, an extensive environmental database, ongoing community consultation, and a comprehensive closure plan are being used to support the modern mine
