Manufacturing

Manufacturing activities play a key role in BC’s economy, generating just over ten percent of the province’s total gross domestic product (GDP) and providing employment for one in every ten workers in the province. Furthermore, manufactured products dominate BC’s international commodity exports, making up about three-quarters of the total value of goods exported from the province to other countries. They comprise a similar share of BC’s inter-provincial trade in goods and services.

Manufacturing is one of the largest economic sectors in North Central BC. With the main manufacturing activities in the region traditionally related to the forestry industry, wood products and paper manufacturing account for the majority of employment and a significant number of the companies in the manufacturing sector. With an established value-added wood industry, North Central BC is home to numerous finger-jointing, re-manufacturing and secondary wood products mills. Additional manufacturing activities in North Central BC are largely related to the region’s growing bioenergy sector and its stable fabrication and machining sector. Furthermore, as a hub for major infrastructure projects and an integral link in the supply chain, there is also a robust concrete manufacturing presence.

The presence of significant manufacturing sectors in North Central BC has created many new opportunities in other areas of manufacturing. The region’s strategic location along key transportation corridors facilitates the export of manufactured products to key markets that are within easy reach in every direction, creating opportunities for growth for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Value-Added Wood Products

A number of people, including those in conservation, labour, and community economic development networks have pushed for increases in value-added wood manufacturing as a way to bring greater stability and prosperity to BC’s local communities. This is particularly true in North Central BC where there is an abundant natural forest resource, and a cluster of supporting organizations.

The value‐added wood products industry is a major contributor to the B.C. economy and plays an important part in forest sector diversification. Over 900 businesses that manufacture products such as treated lumber, engineered wood products, shakes and shingles, poles, log and timber-frame homes, mouldings, and other finished or semi-finished goods make up the value added sector.

Bioenergy Products

Many processes are available for producing bioenergy, from gasification of wood chips for transport fuel production to deriving biofuels from biomass. A growing number of technologies are currently in use of under development for industrial-scale bioenergy production. These include power boilers for heat recovery, cogeneration systems for the production of both heat and electrical power, and gasifier systems for advanced energy recovery.

For more information on bioenergy please view the Bioenergy Sector Profile

Fabricating and Machining

Fabrication and machining involve the cutting, bending, shaping and assembling of materials utilizing power-driven machine tools, such as saws, lathes, milling machines, and drill presses that are used with a sharp cutting tool to physically remove material to achieve a desired geometry. This includes many different operations and processes that produce a wide variety of products and acts as a crucial support system to many other industries throughout the region.

Concrete and Cement Manufacturing

This industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in mixing together water, cement, sand, gravel or crushed stone to make concrete, and delivering it to a purchaser in a plastic or unhardened state. The North Central region of British Columbia is a central hub in the supply chain of many infrastructure and building projects that happen in the North and this is a crucial industry to support these projects.

Organizations and Associations

Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters

Its mandate is to promote the competitiveness of Canadian manufacturers and the success of Canada’s good and services exporters in markets around the globe. Formed in March of 2002, the British Columbia Community Forest Association has become a unified voice for the interests of all B.C. communities engaged in community forest management as well as those seeking to establish community forests.

We are a membership-based organization, and count the participation of over 50 communities and organizations around the province. Council of Forest Industries

The Council of Forest Industries is the voice of the BC interior forest industry.

The Council of Forest Industries works with governments, communities, organizations and individuals to ensure that forest policies in BC support the forest sector and, as a result, those who are dependent on the sector for business income or family supporting jobs. They work within the national and international (Japan, China, Korea) Canada Wood partnership to improve market access at home and overseas and to increase demand for our members’ products.

They are an industry in transition making the move to increasing use of technology, new systems such as six story wood buildings and more biomass based products such as bioenergy.

Our members range from large integrated global scale public companies to medium sized family owned operations to smaller independent niche players. They produce a range of products including lumber, pulp and paper, panels and engineered wood in over 60 facilities located throughout the interior. All aspects of our members’ operations from forestry to production to sales are recognized as world class. We are recognized for our sustainable forest practices, cost competitiveness and support for green buildings.

Ensuring that national, provincial and local government policy makers are well-informed about the value of BC’s forest resources and BC’s forest industry and its contribution to government revenue, provincial gross domestic product and family incomes is a key component of sustainability for our industry and for communities throughout BC. Through their forest education program, annual convention and community relations work they keep stakeholders informed about BC’s forest resources and forestry issues.
